Physics Coaching in Kampala: What to Expect

If you've never done one-on-one physics coaching before, it's natural to wonder what actually happens in a session — whether it's just extra homework help, or something more structured. Here's how physics coaching works in practice, from the first lesson through to exam day.

It starts with a diagnostic, not a syllabus walk-through

Most students come in already having sat through physics lessons at school. What they're usually missing isn't more content — it's clarity on exactly where their understanding breaks down. The first session is spent identifying which topics are genuinely solid and which ones are shaky, using a short set of questions spanning mechanics, waves, electricity, and whichever other areas are relevant to the student's level. This gives both the student and me a clear map of where the coaching time should actually go.

Concepts are built from first principles

A lot of difficulty with physics comes from memorising formulas without understanding where they come from. Coaching sessions work backward from the formula to the underlying idea — why a projectile's range equation looks the way it does, why current divides the way it does in a parallel circuit — so that the student can reconstruct the reasoning under exam pressure instead of just recalling a line from a textbook.

Sessions are built around UNEB's actual assessment style

UCE and UACE physics papers reward specific things: correct units, clearly shown working, and answers that match the command word in the question (state, explain, calculate, derive). Past paper questions are used throughout coaching, not just near the exam, so the student gets used to UNEB's phrasing and marking style early rather than being surprised by it in November.

Weak topics get drilled until they're routine

Once a weak topic is identified, it isn't left after one explanation. It gets revisited across sessions with new variations of the same underlying concept, until the student can handle it without hesitation. This is usually the difference between a student who understood a topic once and a student who can reliably score on it three months later.

Who this is for

  • O-Level students building a foundation ahead of UCE
  • A-Level students preparing for UACE Physics Paper 1 and Paper 2
  • Students who understand physics conceptually but lose marks on structure or calculation
  • Students who need a faster pace or more one-on-one attention than a classroom allows

Getting started

Coaching is available in person in Kampala or online for students elsewhere in Uganda. The first step is always a free diagnostic lesson, so there's no commitment required to find out where you stand.
